Lafayette County, Missouri is rich in military history. Included in this history are the Battle of Lexington (Civil War), Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, and Wentworth Military Academy (from 1880-2016).
There are also memorials dedicated to the veterans in this area. The Lafayette County War Memorial overlooking the Missouri River was erected in 1925, and honored veterans of World War I. In 1989 it was rededicated to honor veterans of World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
Another memorial stands on 10th Street in Lexington (west of Courthouse). This memorial was established in 2006 and was designed by Steve Oliaro. A group of people are expanding that memorial. Four men from the area who played an important role in history are being honored. And the memorial will include more names of local veterans.
